Mirrors Edge
First of all In my opinion you can't really beat the sonic franchise as it is basically seen in most games after its realise in 1991- the present day E.g.- Mirrors Edge and you won't find such a fast paced as sonic nowadays unless it was a racing game such as the Need For Speed Franchise.
All of the sonic games are based on simplicity and fun, when playing these games you feel yourself getting drawn into the game as if you were the actual character. With the Mirror Edge game you feel the same pull that drags you into the game but the difference with mirror is edge to sonic is that with mirror edge because you play in 1st person, the realism that you are actually the character is remarkable. Another comparison between these games is that where mirrors edge gives the player alot more realism, sonic games are much easy than mirrors edge which some players prefer. The comparison between the graphics on the games shows that mirroes edge is clearly the winner because it is a much more recent games but the original sonic game did have some of the best graphics within that time period so technically they are both winners in that topic.
The storyline comparison between both games are quite large because where as the mirrors edge games is based on the sonic games storyline it is much than a simple run and jump game as there are side missoins and a massive lists of extra challenges, techniques and extras to entertain players, Where as the sonic games are just simply a run and jump game where you can only travel in one direction but players find this also massively entertaining.
Overall I think that no matter what the time difference between games, old games can be just as good as newer games despite the obvious graphic difference.
